Checklist for Water Damage

Your Checklist for Water Damage Cleanup

At Stanley Steemer, we understand that water damage cleanup needs to happen as soon as possible after the damage occurs. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a water damage checklist that your clients can refer to when an emergency occurs in their home. Keep this list handy so you can share it with your clients any time water damage cleanup is necessary. By doing so, you can help to minimize the damage but you can also decrease the risk of possible accidents. You may want to distribute this list before trouble strikes so your clients are better prepared if water damage occurs.

  • Stop the water by eliminating it at its source, if possible. Obviously, this helps to minimize the damage and keep the costs down.
  • Turn off the circuit breakers that supply electricity to the wet areas and remove small electrical devices from areas with excess water, if it’s safe to do so.
  • To minimize the damage, avoid walking on wet carpet.
  • Remove small furnishings from carpeted areas or place aluminum foil under furniture legs. This helps to prevent permanent rust or furniture stains.
  • Hang draperies and pin up furniture skirts to avoid contact with wet floors. This helps to prevent permanent watermarks.
  • Remove any breakables, moisture-sensitive and high-value items, as well as items that may stain floor coverings. This might include articles like books, shoes, paper goods, fabrics and potted plants. Check for these items under the beds and other furnishings.
  • Plan for restoration crews to move furniture into unaffected, dry areas. This might require some additional preparation on your part, but it saves time in the long run.
  • Wash your hands after handling affected items. Good personal hygiene is important when dealing with water damage cleanup.
  • Avoid the possibility of electrical shock. Don’t use a home vacuum or shop vacuum to remove the water.
  • Avoid the temptation to turn on fans and heating and air conditioning units as they may spread contamination if the situation is sewage-related.

Turn to the professionals at Stanley Steemer for water damage cleanup. We know exactly what it takes to get your home—and your life—back to normal.

Customer Testimonials
They steam cleaned wall-to-wall carpet in 3 rooms: living room, dining room and family room. The carpet is more than 20 years old and the blond color of a golden lab retriever.
When I made the appointment I explained that I had a heavily soiled traffic area in the family room. I also had brownish stains from leaky plants. When the technician arrived and did the inspection, he gave a range of possible outcomes for the heavily soiled and stained areas. He said they could disappear, get lighter or stay the same. Mentally, I translated what he said as: I'm not a miracle worker, but I'll do my best. Well, his best was pretty impressive. They exceeded my expectations, especially in the family room where the high-traffic area was black. I couldn't believe the change. I am very pleased with the results. Job well done and worth the price!
