How to Get Pet Urine Out of Carpet

Whether it’s because you’re potty training your puppy or your pet has a sickness that causes incontinence, most of us won’t make it our pet’s entire life without experiencing at least one in-house urine accident.

Knowing this is a universal problem, Stanley Steemer formulated easy retail cleaner solutions you can apply right away + a high-powered deodorizer and stain remover that can be applied when we come for a professional carpet cleaning

In this blog, we’re diving deep into those solutions and giving you all the tips you need to get the best results. Let’s get started!

How to Get Pet Stains Out of Carpet

When lifting the urine spot out of carpet, it’s important to act fast so it doesn’t permanently set into a stain. Urine begins as a strong acid but crystallizes and becomes alkaline over time, making it especially difficult to remove after it’s been sitting for a bit.

Here’s our advice for applying our spot remover!

The supplies you’ll need:

  • Stanley Steemer Spot Remover - Since our cleaner has a neutral pH level, it’s safe to use carpet. It’s also effective to treat wicking spots, which are spots that reappear after a carpet has dried.
  • Clean white towels - White towels help prevent color bleeding but are also good at showing how much of the urine is being lifted.
  • Water

The steps you’ll need to take:

  1. Blot All You Can - Before using our solution, blot up as much of the urine as you can using a fresh, white towel.
  2. Spray Our Solution - Use Stanley Steemer Spot remover first, shake well and turn spray nozzle to open. Spray on spot until wet.
  3. Let Solution Sit & Blot - Let sit for 2-4 minutes, then blot up with a clean, white towel moving from the outer edges of the stain inward.
  4. Rinse & Blot Dry - Rinse the affected area with clean water and once again, blot the area with another white, absorbent towel.
  5. Repeat - Repeat the steps above as needed until stain lifted.
  6. Dry - Let the area of carpet dry before walking over.

How to Get Pet Urine Smell Out of Carpet

Once the stain is lifted, you want to follow up with a deodorizer before the odor takes hold in your carpet fibers. For a simple and immediate solution, here’s how to use our Odor Out Plus to remove the pet urine smell from the carpet.

The supplies you’ll need:

  • Stanley Steemer Odor Out Plus - This solution uses natural bacterial enzyme action to digest organic odor sources like urine. This masks the odor at the source and helps break down the bacteria rather than temporarily covering it with fragrances. It also uses a pairing agent to give immediate relief from any odors while the enzyme is working into the carpet.
  • Clean white towels
  • Water

The steps you’ll need to take:

  1. Make Sure Area is Dry - Before applying this deodorizing solution, make sure the spot you’re treating is dry.
  2. Spray Our Solution - Next, shake our Odor Out Plus well and liberally apply directly onto the affected area.
  3. Press Into Carpet - After applying onto the carpet, press the solution into the carpet fibers using a towel.
  4. Keep Area Moist - Keep the solution moist over the carpet for at least 24 hours. You can do this by covering the treated area with a slightly damp cloth.
  5. Dry - Finally, after the solution sits for 24 hours, let the carpet successfully dry before walking over.

Stanley Steemer Professional Cleaning Services

While the methods above will clean the surface of your carpet and protect it from immediate damage, they still aren’t able to reach deep into the fibers. This is true of any retail cleaner, as specialized equipment is necessary to get deep into the carpet fibers.

The solutions our technicians have are also a bit more powerful than what is typically safe to sell as a retail product, as it requires training to properly handle and apply the solution.

When we come, we’ll start with an inspection of the carpet to determine the best course of action for your floor. If any spots are settled into permanent stains, your technician will discuss this with you, but if you follow the steps above, this hopefully won’t be an issue!

Once the inspection is complete, we’ll use our signature hot water extraction method and can apply high-powered stain treatments and deodorizers if necessary. This will knock the bacteria out of their strongholds in the carpet and extract them back into our machine. Anything that remains in the carpet will be slowly broken down by our treatments and eliminated over time.
