The Clean Routine Your Vinyl Floor is BEGGING You to Follow
Updated 2.17.2026
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) are the unsung heroes of busy homes. They look like real hardwood or tile, but they’re more durable, less expensive and way less fussy. That said, they’re not invincible.
If your floors are living through life with pets, kids and a whole lot of foot traffic, here’s how to keep them looking their best. Without turning floor care into a full-time job.
First, What Makes Luxury Vinyl So Great?
LVT and LVP are made to mimic the look of traditional flooring, minus the upkeep. Planks look like hardwood, tiles look like ceramic or stone, and both hold up beautifully in high-traffic areas.
They’re also less porous than natural materials, which means less grime sinking in. But that doesn’t mean they’re immune to build-up, stains or dulling from harsh chemicals. So yes, how you clean them matters.
The Everyday Game Plan
It’s essential to maintain your floors between professional cleanings, but keep in mind that your mop can’t actually remove particles of dirt from your floor (this is why you have to use a broom to catch crumbs). To actually REMOVE the deep down dirt, you’ll need to call us to give you a deep clean.
As you do that everyday maintenance, keep these things in mind to protect your floor in between deep cleanings:
- Sweep or dry mop often. A microfiber mop is your best friend here: gentle, effective and easy on your floors. Soft-bristle brooms and vacuums with hard-floor settings work too. Just skip the beater bar to avoid scratches.
- Wipe up spills and pet messes ASAP. These floors handle a lot, but long-standing moisture isn’t their friend. A quick blot with a damp cloth goes a long way.
- Ditch the harsh stuff. Abrasive cleaners, waxes and anything with ammonia or bleach? Hard pass. They can break down the sealant and leave your floors looking tired. Instead, use a neutral cleaner designed for LVT/LVP, like our professional hardwood floor cleaner, which also works great on luxury vinyl.
- Lift, don’t drag. Moving furniture? Protect your floors by lifting or using felt pads under the legs.
- Mind the paws and sunbeams. Trim pet nails and use rugs or runners in high-traffic spots. And don’t forget window treatments to help reduce UV fading.
Why You Still Need a Pro Cleaning
You sweep. You mop. But over time, grime finds a way when those methods are mostly just moving dirt around. A professional deep clean gets into the textures and crevices you can’t reach on your own. Without over-wetting or damaging the floor.
You’ll need this type of cleaning about twice a year, depending on how much traffic your house sees from kids, pets and the like. We can help you decide the right cadence when we’re at your home.
So, without further ado, here’s how we clean LVT and LVP:
- We inspect first. Not all vinyl is the same. We identify the type, check for damage and choose the safest cleaning solution and method.
- Then we vacuum. Our truck-mounted system pulls up every bit of dry soil and debris before any moisture hits the floor.
- Time for deep clean. Depending on your floor, we use an auto scrubber, 4-jet gecko (not like the Geico gecko, sorry) or both with hot water and our professional-grade cleaner to lift grime without hurting the surface.
- We dry fast. A microfiber mop ensures no water is left behind. Your floors are safe to walk on right away.
- Final walkthrough. We check everything with you to make sure it looks and feels just right.
