Late in July, Stanley Steemer Carpet Cleaner in Maryland Heights received a telephone call from Jennings resident Diane Young.

"She was having problems with mold in her house," Stanley Steemer Restoration Manager Marty Kelly said. "And she said straight out that she couldn't pay for it. She is a senior citizen and didn't have the money."

That's when Kelly and other employees decided to start a community-service program and began with Young. One of Kelly's first calls was to Tom Constantin, owner of the Dellwood-based American Air and Mold Specialists.

The two businesses often send clients to each other, depending on the scheduling and size of the projects. Kelly thought it would be a good idea to team up to help Young.

Workers from both companies recently showed up at Young's house and started to work. American Air installed an Easy Breeze ventilation system and dehumidifier while the Stanley Steemer crew cleaned out air ducts and mold spots throughout the house.

At the end of the day, the work crews had given her about $2,000 worth of service and equipment.

"They did a fantastic job," Young, 60, said. "The situation was life-threatening. I literally thought I'd have to move out of my house. I'm single and I don't nave any family living around here. This renews my faith in people."

And the results?

"We visited her a couple of days after the job," Constantin said. "She told us it was the first time in a long while that she woke up and didn't feel like she had a head cold."

Her happy reaction was worth the effort, Kelly said.

"We definitely want to do this more," he said.

Businesses should try and do more charity, Constantin said.

"It's a good way for us to give back to the community," he said.

For American Air and Mold Specialists, this was not its first charity case. For every 20 projects, the company will ask the customer to submit the name of someone they know who needs help, but can't afford to pay for it.

"I'll pull a name out and offer a free Easy Breeze system," he said. "They are very happy when we tell them."

As for Young, she has a souvenir of their visit. All eight workers autographed the Easy Breeze machine in the basement, reminding her of the day when strangers came to help her.
