Questions
Why should I clean my air ducts?
Given the nature of ventilation systems, dirt, dust, and other debris often collect throughout the system. Each time your system is activated, these pollutants are circulated throughout your home. Over time, this debris can accumulate to a level where the efficiency of your ventilation system is negatively impacted. Having your heating and air conditioning system thoroughly cleaned will remove these potentially harmful contaminants.
What are the key indicators or signs that my air ducts need cleaning?
While a video inspection is the clearest way to know for sure if your ducts need to be cleaned, there are a number of key indicators that will tell you if this is a service you should consider:
  • Supply and return vent covers are dirty.
  • Dark filtration lines are apparent on the walls, ceiling, or carpet surrounding the vents.
  • Excessive dust in the home.
  • Variance in temperature or air flow from room to room.
  • An increase in energy is needed to operate the HVAC system at desired settings, most likely resulting in higher utility bills. This may indicate that dirt and debris could be blocking coils and/or ductwork, which may restrict airflow.
  • A newly constructed home, remodeling, or renovations—these activities could cause post construction debris, drywall dust, sawdust, and other construction-related debris to build up and settle in your HVACs system.
  • Presence of one or more pets.
  • Members of the household smoke.
  • You recently updated your ventilation system by replacing your furnace or adding ductwork.
  • Water damage or flooding occurred in the ductwork. As a result, sediment could build up in the system and cleaning could minimize the chance of microbial growth.
  • If the indicators outlined above exist in conjunction with an individual in your home suffering from allergies, headaches, nausea, eye/throat irritation or fatigue.
Are there any health benefits to having this service performed?
  • Dust, mold, fungi, and bacteria have been shown to collect in ventilation systems. These contaminants are widely believed to be potentially harmful to your health, possibly irritating or triggering certain allergies.
  • The removal of these contaminants from your HVAC system should be viewed as one step in improving the overall quality of air in your home.
Will having my air ducts cleaned reduce my energy bills?
  • Dirt and debris may collect in your ventilation system blocking ductwork and key components of the furnace, including the evaporator coil and blower.
  • Build-up of these contaminants in the system can restrict airflow causing it to work harder and longer, thus expending more energy.
  • By cleaning the entire HVAC system, you may see an increase in the energy efficiency of your system, which in some cases translates to lower utility bills. These cleanings may also extend the life of your furnace or air conditioning system by reducing wear and tear.
How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?
The common household needs their air ducts cleaned every 3-5 years. Many different factors should be considered when trying to determine the need and frequency of duct cleaning in your home and can be determined based on your answers to the following questions:
  • Do you have a newly constructed home? Have you completed remodeling, or any renovations? These activities could cause post-construction debris, drywall dust, sawdust, and other construction related debris to build up and settle in your HVAC system.
  • Does anyone in your household suffer from allergies, asthma, or any other respiratory condition?
  • Does anyone in your household smoke?
  • Do you have any pets? Hair and dander collect in ducts.
  • What part of the country do you live in? Is there a high level of particulates in the air? (dust, sand, dense foliage)
  • Have you recently updated your ventilation system by replacing your furnace or adding ductwork?
  • Have you had any water damage in your home?
  • What type of floor coverings are in your home and how often are they vacuumed?
  • What type of filter is used in your HVAC system?
Stanley Steemer offers free inspections. Upon inspection, after considering all of the above variables, we will then be able to assess your system and let you know how often your air ducts should be cleaned.
How long does it take to clean an average ventilation system?
  • On average, it takes approximately 3-4 hours to clean a ventilation system with one furnace and 15-20 vents.
  • Additional time may be needed depending on the size of the ventilation system, the number of furnaces, the number of vents, the condition of the system, and the services that are completed.
How much does it cost to have my air ducts cleaned?
  • For a moderately sized home with one furnace, the average price range is $400-$600. A Stanley Steemer technician will provide you with a final quote following the initial inspection of the home.
  • The price is determined by the size and location of the system, the number of ventilation systems in the home, the number of vents, and the services that are completed.
  • Consumer Alert! When comparing air duct cleaning companies, do not base your decision on price alone. Be sure that you understand the scope of work that each company intends to perform for the price they are quoting.
Do I need to have my air ducts cleaned if my home is brand new?
Surprisingly enough, yes. Construction debris is one of the most common types of contamination that we find in air duct systems. Fine particulates, such as drywall dust or sawdust, as well as other materials, can make their way into your system when the construction crews are cleaning up. The only way to thoroughly remove all of these pollutants from your system is through professional cleaning.
Is your vacuum truck mounted or portable?
  • Stanley Steemer uses both the HEPA-filtered portable vacuum collection unit and the truck-mounted vacuum collection unit.
  • Both forms of vacuum equipment are extremely effective and provide the same result.
  • Please contact your local Stanley Steemer expert to verify which system they use.
Do you offer the application of sanitizers and sealants?
  • Products are available if required—please check with your local Stanley Steemer.
  • We will need to visually inspect and assess the condition of your ventilation system to determine if this service is necessary.
